Does microscopic soil science thrill you but you have no idea where to start? This class is for you.
Class 1 - Meet Your Microscope - How your microscope works, how to focus a slide, how to prepare a sample, troubleshooting and cleaning.
Class 2 - Identifying Key Organisms in the Soil Food Web
Class 3 - Evaluating a Sample
Class 4 - One hour private 1:1 with Alter Eco Farms to learn to practice your skills.
Class fee includes a 1 quart living soil sample that you can use to practice identification.
This is a basic class to get your toes wet and allow you to assess your own samples at home. This class will not teach you how to become an independent lab tech, that’s going to take a bit more time. If you’re interested in becoming a lab tech we suggest you check out Dr. Elaine Ingham’s Soil Food Web School.
Details of this class are still TBA. We hope to offer a virtual, and in person option. Please fill out the form below to notified when the class is available. Class anticipated in January / February 2027.

This is a GREAT class to take in person, but we are working on a virtual option as well.
-
You do not need a microscope to take the course, but having one will give you the benefit of being able to practice hands on. Unless you are in Chattanooga, TN you will need a microscope for the 1:1 class.
-
We will provide a small supply list before the class begins. The total cost of additional supplies should be under $50.
